How much is democracy worth to you?
Those who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 famously pledged their “lives, fortunes and sacred honor” to the cause of freedom. Think about that word: fortunes.
It was no idle promise. Haym Solomon, a Jewish American merchant who gave $20,000 to sustain General Washington’s troops during the darkest days of the war, died penniless when the new government could not repay its debts. Robert Morris of Pennsylvania, likely the richest man in America at the time, came to the rescue of the Continental Army in 1780 but likewise ended in bankruptcy.
When it came to democracy, they didn’t count the cost. Because revolutions (even nonviolent ones) run on money. Indivisible Santa Fe does too.
We organize mass rallies like No Kings. We train volunteers in voter registration. We lobbied the state legislature this past winter to pass bills like HB9 that barred private detention centers in our state. We've sent out thousands of “get out the vote’ postcards to keep New Mexico blue. Do you know what it costs to send one postcard to one undecided voter? And there's more ...
We distributed "Everyone Welcome But ICE" posters to hundreds of local employers to post at their place of business. Partnered with the Food Depot to feed our neighbors when SNAP benefits disappeared during the Republican government shutdown. Handed out 5000 free whistles to form rapid response units if and when immigration agents are spotted nearby.
