After the Election - Be Prepared ⚠️
In a healthy democracy the midterm elections would proceed in a predictable way. Votes would be counted. Results would be certified. Duly elected officials would be sworn into office.
Nobody should be surprised if this year's elections unfold differently.
Will Bunch recently wrote in the Philadelphia Inquirer about ways Trump could abuse presidential powers to defy the results of the election. It's a lot to absorb, but it's important to read.

Indivisible National
No Kings this weekend was the largest early vote effort in American history. 3,000 events all over the world, and everything went off essentially without a hitch. Joyful, community-led people power in every nook and cranny of this country, pushing back against election sabotage and standing up for our democracy. It was a beautiful sight to behold, and we’ll report out very encouraging early vote data along with some deserved celebrations this Thursday on What’s the Plan.
But there was one egregious episode during No Kings, and it didn’t come from any of the millions of patriotic Americans who showed up. It came from one of the several Silicon Valley mega corporations that pose both an acute threat in the lead up to the midterms and a longer term existential threat to democracy itself. We should learn from this episode, demand immediate answers, and plan accordingly.
It was Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, a trillion-dollar corporation, that caused the trouble. I got the news while I was at my second No Kings protest. Without warning, Meta suddenly suspended the No Kings Instagram account and proceeded to block access for 4 hours. Then the company’s spokespeople offered a weak apology and blamed a glitch.
Forgive me if I say this smells like bullshit.
Because this cycle of harm, excuses, and empty apologies is nothing new for Meta. I can’t cover everything Meta has done, but two categories stand out: undermining elections and cozying up to Trump.
1) Undermining elections.
2017: Facebook admitted Russian operatives may have reached 126 million Americans during the lead-up to our election, which Zuckerberg later apologized for.
2018: Zuckerberg said it was “my mistake” that a Trump campaign data firm harvested 87 million users’ data in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
2021: Meta’s own internal task force found it failed to stop the Stop the Steal movement behind the January 6 insurrection. Indeed, the new Aaron Sorkin film tells the story of the whistleblower who exposed it.
2024: Three months before the election, Meta shut down the tool researchers used to track election misinformation, over the objection of more than 100 civil society groups.
Last week: Brazil's top electoral court ordered Meta not to throttle reach, restrict searches, or remove posts in ways that would benefit the right-wing authoritarian in the upcoming national elections.
2) Cozying up to Trump.
Late 2024: Zuckerberg remade Meta for Trump's return. He dined at Mar-a-Lago, named Republican Joel Kaplan to run global policy, put Trump ally Dana White on the board, and scrapped fact-checking.
2025: Meta paid tribute to Trump with a $1 million donation to the inauguration, $25 million to settle Trump’s lawsuit, and a donation to his ballroom.
Late 2025: Meta took down a Chicago ICE-tracking group after Pam Bondi’s Justice Department's outreach.
So what we have here is a trillion-dollar company with demonstrated power to misinform the public, a long history of undermining democratic processes, and a very recent history of buddying up with the Trump regime. We’d be fools to take its word that knocking No Kings offline on No Kings Day was a simple, accidental glitch.
Towards a post-Nerd Reich world. I wish we could avoid Meta products entirely. Indivisible has made such moves before. We were the biggest pro-democracy organization to leave X when Elon turned Twitter into his personal neo-Nazi playpen, and we’ve encouraged other organizations and pro-democracy politicians to do the same. That was possible because real alternatives existed -- and we’ve tried to guide folks to them. I hope our movement eventually gets there with Meta too, but we can’t yet abandon these vast spaces (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads) where too much of the persuadable public is active online. Doing so cedes that space fully to the political forces we need to defeat. For now, we need to push for oversight, and build audiences on decentralized platforms, and those we control -- like email and SMS (tell your friends to subscribe!) or better yet in real life (find your Indivisible group here).
Individual and organizational action alone can’t defuse the Nerd Reich threat. It’s the government’s job to protect its people and institutions from a force like this. Within a day of Meta’s actions against No Kings, Chris Murphy, Chris Van Hollen, Bernie Sanders, House Judiciary Dems (led by Jamie Raskin), and Pramila Jayapal called for answers and investigations.
If your Members of Congress haven’t raised the alarm, tell them to. Whatever your party, and whether or not you like No Kings, nobody should take this company at its word when it comes to election interference that benefits Trump.
If there’s any silver lining to all this, it’s this: it backfired spectacularly. More people heard about No Kings because Meta knocked it offline. Heading into an election at risk of sabotage by Trump, more Americans know the tech giants are not our friends. And heading into a new Congress, more elected officials are setting their sights on these Goliaths.
When we say No Kings, we mean no kings. Not in the White House, not in any state house, and not in Silicon Valley. The people have the power, and all these fascists are bound to lose.
In solidarity,
Ezra Levin
Co-Executive Director, Indivisible
Your weekly to-dos
- Demand your Members of Congress investigate Meta’s suspicious takedown of the No Kings coalition’s Instagram account and wider trend of silencing opposition organizations and candidates. During No Kings on Saturday, the coalition’s Instagram page was hidden and administrators were locked out for hours. Meta offered a flimsy excuse, but we know billionaires putting their thumb on the scale when we see it. Meta’s history of undermining democracy and capitulating to Trump only underlines the urgency of this moment -- our MoCs must immediately take action to investigate Meta and protect our elections from Big Tech interference.
- Fired up after No Kings Day and wondering what comes next? Help build our movement by joining the No Kings coalition for a mass call on Wednesday to talk about our final push for voter turnout and how we’re preparing to protect the election results(8pm ET/5pm PT). No matter how you mobilized on Saturday -- from voting early with your neighbors to having conversations about defending the vote -- this is where we’ll continue to build the strongest grassroots election defense force in history. Stopping Trump from sabotaging the elections requires long-term strategy, so join us to learn how we can sustain Saturday’s momentum. Read on for more!
- Inspired by No Kings to become an election defender? Sign up for our election protection program, Hands Off Our Vote, and join more than 50,000 fellow Indivisibles who have committed to defend the vote across the US. The Trump regime thrives on chaos, confusion, and corruption. We thrive on planning and preparation -- and that’s how we’ll get through any election subversion attempts Trump and his Big Lie cronies throw our way. When you sign up, you’ll receive updates on threats to voting, how to respond, and ways to help before and after Election Day. If you’re ready to jump in, sign up and then review our Hands Off Our Vote resources now.
- Make your plan to vote early, if you haven’t already, using this quick and easy No Kings tool. Voting early is one of the most powerful mechanisms we have to combat voter suppression, protect our ballots, and prevent in-person subversion or intimidation on Election Day. Already voted early, or have your plan set in stone? Share the No Kings early vote tool with three friends.
- This Thursday, October 22, join What’s the Plan to hear about the impact of No Kings Day on early vote numbers, and for a conversation with special guest Sam Forstag, running for Congress in Montana’s 1st District (3pm ET/12pm PT). Each week on What’s the Plan, Indivisible co-executive directors Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin discuss the latest news, talk local organizing strategy, and take questions from Indivisibles across the country. This week, we’re thrilled to welcome Sam Forstag, the Montana smokejumper and union leader running to fight for working families in MT-01 and defeat Trump endorsee Aaron Flint. Paid for by Indivisible Action. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee.
- On Wednesday, October 21, join us to make calls for Tom Perriello, running to flip Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District(5:30pm ET/2:30pm PT). Perriello represented VA-05 in Congress nearly two decades ago before Republicans took control of the seat in 2010, but the district has changed, making this a real toss-up. Working families are fed up with Rep. John McGuire’s capitulation to Trump and corrupt special interests. With your help, we can send Perriello back to the House. Paid for by Indivisible Action. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee.
- Want to brush up on your phone banking and door knocking skills in the final push before Election Day? Tomorrow, October 20, join Indivisible’s digital organizing team for a GOTV tools training so you can feel confident talking to voters (7pm ET/4pm PT). During the training, we’ll walk through the Scale to Win autodialer for phone banks and the Neighbor2Neighbor tool for canvassing, so no matter where you live or how you choose to volunteer, you’ll be prepared to have important conversations about this election. And this is a learning-only space, so no pressure to make calls or go out and knock doors right away. Paid for by Indivisible Action. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee.
P.S. You may have seen that Elon Musk is pouring hundreds of millions into this election. Other tech oligarchs are trying to buy the election for Republicans, too. We don’t need millions -- our voter outreach is more effective than their TV ads -- but we DO need grassroots support. Our fundraising is lagging at a really bad time, so if you have a few bucks to spare, please chip in to help fund our phonebanks, canvassing, trainings, and everything else we’re doing to win the House and Senate.
Wednesday, October 21: Post-No Kings Mass Call
After 3,000 separate No Kings events on Saturday, this Wednesday’s call will be a place for every single one of us to come together around a unified strategy to defend our elections and enforce the results.
Together, we will utilize the power of millions of people in all 50 states to protect our elections, defend the vote, and block any of Trump’s attempts to subvert the will of the people.
Gaslit Nation Phone Bank
Next Wednesday, October 28, Indivisible is once again partnering with popular podcast Gaslit Nation for a phone bank as part of our Podcasters Save Democracy program!
Gaslit Nation is hosted by Andrea Chalupa, a journalist, author, and expert on authoritarian states. The podcast combines deep-dive journalism, history, and analysis for people who want to stay grounded and creative in the fight for our democracy.
Feeling the spooky season spirit? You’re encouraged to come in costume for this pre-Halloween phone bank! 🎃
Paid for by Indivisible Action. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee.
Good News for a Change
The final weeks before Election Day are prime time for candidates’ TV ads, especially in battlegrounds. But this year, Republicans have toxified themselves so much -- and have been toxified by their allegiance to Trump -- that they’re already pulling out of spending in key races they’re no longer confident they can win.
Earlier this month, the Senate Leadership Fund canceled ad spending in North Carolina and redirected those funds to Kansas, usually considered a Republican stronghold. Then, just last week, SLF TV ads went off the air in Georgia for the first time yet in the race. (Thanks to Jon Ossoff’s strong polling and fundraising lead, Dems were off too.)
As polls and race ratings shift in Democrats’ favor, the House arm of the GOP’s super PACs, the Congressional Leadership Fund, is pulling back too -- including in key races in IA-01 and NJ-07, where Indivisible is supporting Christina Bohannan and Rebecca Bennett in their bids for Congress.
It’s great news for Dems that Republicans are panicking and pulling out of these races, but we cannot get complacent. Polls, race ratings, and ad spends are one thing -- actually getting out the vote is another.
