Because we have such a robust program - and two causes you need to know about - please come a bit early or on time, our doors are always open at 5 and our first speaker will begin about 5:15.

April continues our gubernatorial theme. Hear from the Former United States Secretary of the Interior, and candidate for New Mexico’s next Governor, Deb Haaland…and! our current NM Secretary of State, and candidate for Lieutenant Governor, Maggie Toulouse Oliver.

Also, learn from featured nonprofits and organizers including:

In 2026, this New Zealand-based nonprofit, will lead an Indigenous water exchange between the Pueblo of Isleta and Māori Pou Tupua leaders from the Whanganui River (the river in New Zealand that was given personhood as means to protect it).

Thursday, April 9: ROCk on!

Santa Fe is currently lacking emergency shelter for folks without a house 🤯

Marisol Atkins has been working with the group that was in charge of Pete’s Place.  Before they lost the contract they had already decided that having a homeless shelter in an unplanned space was not workable, and they started researching for a place to build their vision from scratch.  They plan to have their new site completely safe for their homeless people and the neighbors. They have purchased a site, talked to the neighbors and have very detailed plans as to what their site will offer.  Marisol visited with the Indivisible Homeless team and was able to answer every question and show us how everything we asked would be handled.  We encourage people interested in learning about their homeless shelter to attend the meeting on Thursday, April 9 at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center.  Make a list of your questions - how ROCk can safely integrate with the community:

What’s all this talk about a ROCk?
Did you know that Santa Fe does not currently have an emergency shelter for unhoused folks? Although Interfaith Community Services were ousted from their Cerrillos Rd location last summer, the organization has been developing a plan over the last few years for a new facility that will serve multiple needs

Monday, April 13: Speaker Series with Matthew McQueen

Paul spoke about the significance of this role in New Mexico, and will introduce Matthew at next week's Speaker Series meeting. Read this and come prepared with some good questions!

NM Criminal Justice Reform

IndivisibleSOS-Santa Fe has been working on modernizing and reforming the criminal justice system in NM.  We have the country’s highest crime rates per capita, and some of the most out-of-date and ineffective agencies that don’t work well together.  In February the NM House of Representatives unanimously passed HM 13, a legislative Memorial establishing a task force to develop legislative recommendations for 2027 to establish a 10-year plan and funding strategy to modernize and reform this system to increase all of our safety.

They need help from Indivisible organizations around the state to let the Legislative Finance Committee (LFC) know how important it is to us that it implement this legislation.  Memorials are a form of legislation that is not technically binding, and there is a lot of competition for the LFC’s resources and attention.  This effort is a citizen initiative, and we need them to listen to us and take action.

Write to nathan.small@nmlegis.gov and let them know you want them to implement HM-13!

War crimes

In case you missed it, our authoritarian regime is continuing to advocate for war crimes. As usual, HCR frames it up nicely.

(April 6 newsletter)

In this week’s newsletter, Ezra talks about how we’re going to let Trump's enablers know that we're going to hold each and every one of them accountable for their crimes and abuses of the Constitution, and we share actions for holding the line against Trump's bloody and illegal war and getting ready for a day of economic disruption on May Day.

This week in politics could be cataclysmic or boring. The crises didn’t go anywhere – it’s just that Congress left town for recess.

DHS remains in technical “shutdown” because of Mike Johnson’s signature cocktail of incompetence, cowardice, and malice.

Pam Bondi joined Kristi Noem on the shitcanned list, and so we can expect Epstein-focused grilling during her replacement’s confirmation hearings, but that won’t come until later this month.

Meanwhile Trump, with the stage to himself, is promising to escalate his disastrous Iran war with new war crimes and attacks on civilians on Tuesday. Maybe he follows through or maybe he shifts gear last minute -- nobody knows. Trump is going to be erratic, which is why following the historic success of No Kings III, we’ve got to continue organizing millions of people into fierce, growing, ungovernable opposition.

Weakened authoritarians flail, which means we should expect more flailing. If, like me, you think Trump is a leader in the mold of a Viktor Orbán or a similar authoritarian, you should expect more chaotic escalations. Orbán himself is facing a bad election next week, and the breaking news is of a potential “false flag” operation intended to sway public opinion ahead of the vote.

We know authoritarians like Orbán and Trump don't go quietly, so we can't simply wait for peaceful and normal midterm elections here in the US. As we near election day and the walls close in, Trump will flail and escalate more. This is predictable, and so we should prepare for it.

How to hasten the regime’s downfall: make accountability feel inevitable. It would be reassuring if Noem and Bondi had been fired for committing crimes and violating the Constitution. But they weren’t fired for what they did -- they were fired because they didn’t break the law more and faster at Trump’s direction. And we should expect their replacements to be handpicked for their loyalty and amorality.

It’s important that Trump’s handpicked successors, their deputies, and their deputies’ deputies understand that Trump is losing, that Democrats will win the Congress in seven months, and that real, serious, unflinching accountability is coming. There are two ways to send that message:

  1. Organize massive public opposition to the regime. Good news here. Yesterday was the one year anniversary of the Hands Off -- the first major mobilization after Trump’s reelection. We had three million people at 1,300 protests. Then we had five million at 2,100 protests for the first No Kings in June, then seven million people at nearly 2,700 protests for No Kings II, then more than eight million people at more than 3,300 protests for No Kings III. The movement is growing, and we’re growing it. The next big public opportunity to grow our ranks is May Day – a national day without school, work, or shopping. You’ll hear more about this from Indivisible below and in the days to come.
  2. Support Dems who commit to serious accountability. We need Democrats to repeatedly, clearly, and with great specificity talk about the accountability to come. Indivisible has four endorsed congressional candidates -- Jasmine Clark for GA-13, Brad Lander for NY-10, Peggy Flanagan for Minnesota Senate, and Julie Gonzales for Colorado Senate -- all of whom support an aggressive oversight agenda for the soon-to-be Democratic Congress next year. Anybody who has committed crimes and violated the Constitution should know that oversight and accountability are coming soon. Anybody considering assisting Trump in sabotaging the midterms should be fully aware that such a move is criminally dangerous for them personally. For the sake of the rule of law and rehabilitation of our democracy, Democrats must go on offense. And we should be supporting those Dems in primaries who promise that.

I hope that this is a boring week. I hope Trump finds his way to chickening out again. But regardless of what happens, I know the trajectory between now and midterms will be rocky because Trump will do his damnedest to make it rocky. Our best shot at crushing the regime electorally and stopping the backslide into authoritarianism depends on all of us organizing a loud, entrenched, unstoppable, nonviolent opposition. Good thing that’s always been the plan.

In solidarity,

Ezra Levin
Co-Executive Director, Indivisible

Your weekly to-dos

  1. Contact your Members of Congress: Trump's war on Iran must be stoppedOver the weekend, Trump announced his plans to commit war crimes against Iran -- attacking civilian infrastructure like power plants and bridges -- if the government doesn't cave to his (expletive-laden) demand that it open the Strait of Hormuz. The regime's frenzied bloodlust must be stopped. Email your Members of Congress via the above link, then call your senators and call your representative to say: Not one cent more for Trump's war.
  2. Mass planning call: Join May Day Strong's Building Power by Flexing Power call (Thurs, 7pm ET/4pm PT) to gear up for the nationwide day of economic disruptionWe'll discuss how we'll demonstrate our people power this May Day by withdrawing our participation in the country's economic engine (more info, below).
  3. Host a post-No Kings gathering: We're asking Indivisibles to keep the No Kings energy going with house meetings of your local community – friends, neighbors, folks newly activated by No Kings. There's a lot to do between now and the midterms and it's vital that we grow the portion of the population engaged in sustained action against the regime (more info, below).
  4. Join your local Indivisible group. Many of you signed up for No Kings updates ahead of the protests and are receiving this newsletter for the first or second time. If you found that day of resistance empowering, you're not alone – and you can lean into that experience regularly! Take a look at our map of Indivisible chapters, find the group nearest you, and sign up to keep organizing in your community.

P.S. As we approach May Day, Indivisible is also working hard to absorb new members, train new leaders, and keep growing the pro-democracy movement on which our nation's future depends. If you can, please pitch in to support the everyday work that's the foundation of organizing against fascism.

May Day economic disruption: No work, no school, no shopping

Led by May Day Strong and building on the momentum of No Kings 3, this May Day will be a day of economic disruption, as we flex our collective power to demand an end to the oligarch-enabled Trump regime. The central action will be a proactive, nonviolent choice to engage in little-to-no economic activity on May 1: no work, no school*, no shopping.

Not everyone will be able to do everything -- if you can spend no money on May 1, that's fantastic. If you can walk away from work and/or school, even better. Join a local activity? Also great! (As with the No Kings events, we'll have a map of events coming soon.)

Then join May Day Strong's national call on Thursday (7pm ET/4pm PT) to hear from organizers across the country about flexing -- and building on -- our tremendous collective power

Ahead of Thursday's call, you can also take a look at "The Real Affordability Agenda" to learn more about why economic action is so important -- and spread the word in your circles!

We deserve a country that puts the Constitution above the president, puts workers above billionaires, and puts our freedoms above the greed and incompetence of a wannabe-king and his wannabe-court.

Mass protests like No Kings 3 change the political narrative and provide an unparalleled opportunity for coalition building. Now's the time to activate that massive coalition. See you on May Day!

*If you are under 18 years old, you must ask a parent or guardian for permission to engage in this action.

A core principle behind all Indivisible-associated events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.

Host a post-No Kings community gathering

Mass actions like No Kings Day are only one expression of grassroots organizing. We're asking Indivisibles to host small "What's Next after No Kings" meetings over the next week, if possible -- gatherings of folks activated by No Kings Day and other friends, neighbors, or family who are ready to stand up against Trump.

Grassroots action is foundational to the sustained organizing we need to stand up against ICE; bolster nonviolent and lawful acts of noncooperation; defend the midterms; and, crucially, enforce the elections' outcome. The No Kings coalition has pulled together a toolkit to walk you through taking action in your community, with everything you'll need to plan, facilitate, and follow up afterwards.

All around you, there are people who recognize the regime's actions as an aggressive dismantling of democracy -- but don't know how to fight back.

Download the toolkit here, send emails and texts, print out and distribute the flyer around your neighborhood.

Stopping Trump's plans to warehouse ICE detainees

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been buying up warehouses across the country to convert into mass detention facilities for ICE.

We've been fighting back though -- and winning. Twelve (12!) rumored warehouse sales did not move forward because Indivisibles and other activist groups showed up. Now we're building the infrastructure to keep this fight going for the long haul.

Join us on April 14 (8pm ET/ 5pm PT) for a national training call with Detention Watch Network and the Disappeared in America project. You'll hear directly from frontline organizers, and learn tactics and strategies to host peaceful actions in defense of immigrants in your community on the "Communities Not Cages National Day of Action" on April 25.

You'll get an overview of the issue, get resources to help you host a safe, effective event in your community, and learn how to register your actions live on Mobilize, with step-by-step support.

There's a role for everyone in the ongoing fight to dismantle Trump's detention agenda, whether you're in a community with a proposed warehouse facility or not. On April 25, we take our first step, together.

IndivisiWIN of the Week

This week we're celebrating Indivisibles in America's redder areas, places where conventional wisdom would tell you that support for Trumpian authoritarianism is solid. Places like Anchorage, AK; Huntsville, AL; The Villages, FL; Rapid City, SD; central Massachusetts; Staten Island, NY; Chico, CA -- on and on!

A group of people marching with American flags and signs that read IMPEACH REMOVE CONVICT and NO KINGS NO TYRANTS NO TRUMP

No Kings protest on Staten Island, March 28

On Staten Island, for instance, 1,000 people took part in what was the borough's largest No Kings event to date. Rural Chico, California saw more than 1,000 at their protest -- which in turn led, at a time of national economic downturn, to measurably increased foot traffic for local businesses (because community engagement is good for everyone!). A coalition of small-town groups in central Massachusetts organized multiple town-square protests, timed so folks could event-crawl, ultimately drawing 7,700 participants and establishing a solid foundation for future regional organizing.

Organizing in areas considered Trump strongholds can be especially daunting, but these groups have shown that, no matter where anyone falls on the traditional political spectrum, we know where we stand on pointless wars, the kidnapping and killing of our neighbors, and Trump's aggressive efforts to shred the Constitution. We stand together.
