The year 2025 saw both unprecedented threats to constitutional democracy and the rise of mass resistance to stop the authoritarian takeover of America. It was a year of action for Indivisible. What did we accomplish?

Thousands turned out in the streets for protests in Santa Fe (and millions across the nation) for Hands Off in April, No Kings in June, and No Kings 2 in October. Weekly Tesla Takedowns (outside the dealership in Bernalillo) drew attention to Elon Musk’s disastrous appointment to DOGE, with the automaker’s valuation dropping $380 billion by mid June.

In September, at a Labor Day Rally for Collective Action, we launched a Signs of Solidarity campaign, inviting local businesses to display notices proclaiming “Everyone Welcome But ICE,” helping to protect employees against unlawful detentions by Trump’s masked agents. A weekly Speaker’s Corner near the Railyard highlighted the importance of protecting freedom of expression, while our support for the Disney boycott brought Jimmy Kimmel’s cancelled show back on the air in a matter of days, demonstrating the power of our collective consumer choices. When Trump cut SNAP benefits to hungry families during the government shutdown, Indivisible partnered with our local Food Depot to make sure kids didn’t go to bed without dinner.

Indivisible Santa Fe marched in the city's annual Pride Parade and, in concert with Disappeared in America, organized a vigil at Home Depot calling attention to the big box store's acquiescence to ICE. Signs of Fascism (pictured below) featured protestors clad in black carrying placards decrying Election Rigging, Bribery and other symptoms of a democracy in decline.

Organized lobbying targeted the state legislature when in session, for example, pushing for a ban on CoreCivic and other privately run prisons in New Mexico that serve as holding centers for those facing deportation. And if we have anything to do with it, thousands of postcards mailed to New Mexico's Congressional District 2 will help hold a swing seat in next year's midterms.

Twelve months ago, when I first got involved, Indivisible in Santa Fe had only a handful of members. Today our roster includes over a thousand friends and activists working on immigration reform, healthcare, and other progressive causes, seeking to restore the rule of law and create a government that works for the many rather than the few.

Did our efforts make a difference? Trump’s polling numbers are at all-time lows. The MAGA cult appears fractured. Retribution prosecutions against Letitia James, James Comey, and the President’s other political enemies are floundering in the courts. The ravings of the Chief Executive on Truth Social have become so unhinged that even loyalists are beginning to suspect King Donald is panicked.

But this is no time to declare early victory. We know from past experience—January 6th, for example—that this President will stop at nothing to cling to office. We know that Trump is surrounded by a phalanx of other wannabe dictators ready to step in if the old man totters. And we know that behind them all stands a billionaire class of plutocrats with no interest in any change to the status quo that might threaten their own privilege, wealth or power.

So resolve to make 2026 the year we restore hope, dignity and opportunity for ordinary Americans—the voters, workers and citizens who represent “we the people” but who are now being shut out and shafted by Kings and Oligarchs. Register to vote. Write a letter to the editor. Call your legislators (see our Electeds webpage). Stand up for what you believe. And join me in working with Indivisible, where you’ll find camaraderie and strength in numbers sufficient to turn the tide and bring back the promise of a future better than the year just past.

Monday evenings starting in January at 7:00 pm, Christ Lutheran Church, 1701 Arroyo Chamiso Road in Santa Fe.
